Artists from across Australia, working in any medium, are encouraged to submit works for the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art 2023.
In its 20th year, the biennial acquisitive art prize is open to emerging and established artists and entries must respond to the theme ‘Future’.
The prize is presented in association with Montsalvat and a Finalist Exhibition will be held at the Barn Gallery from Thursday 20 April to Sunday 11 July 2023.
The Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art is unique in that it considers a local and open prize category and is one of the most significant prizes in Australia. The winner of the Open Prize ($20,000 acquisitive),
Local Prize ($10,000 acquisitive) and Mayor’s Award ($500) will be announced at the opening event.
The People’s Choice Award will be announced on Tuesday 20 June 2023.
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said the prize, established in 2003, is another example of Council’s commitment to highlighting the excellence of both local and national contemporary artists.
“The theme ‘Future’ is expansive and during uncertain times the future is any number of possibilities. I’m looking forward to seeing the response from our artistic community,” Cr Eyre said.
The submitted artworks will be shortlisted by judges:
• Jane Trengove – Artist and disability advocate
• Steph Noah – Curator, Banyule City Council
• Spiro Panigirakis – Head of Fine Art Department, Monash University
The winners will then be selected by a separate judging panel including:
• Hannah Presley – Senior Curator, Museums and Collections, University of Melbourne
• Melissa Keys – Senior Curator, Heide Museum of Modern Art
• Jason Smith – Director and CEO, Geelong Gallery
